Sun Princess Galley Steward Missing in Dardanelles

A 27-year-old Kenyan national working as a galley steward aboard the Sun Princess is missing after going overboard in the Dardanelles Strait on August 20, 2025.
Princess Cruises said the man-overboard incident was identified during a review of CCTV footage, after which the captain and bridge team activated emergency procedures. The vessel coordinated with local maritime search-and-rescue authorities and launched multiple boats that searched the area for several hours. Despite the extensive effort, the crew member has not been found.
In an announcement to guests, the captain stated:
“We are deeply saddened to confirm that a crew member was reported to have gone overboard. Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and colleagues of our team member during this difficult time. The Princess Family Assistance team will be working with the crew member’s family to support them. We ask that you please join us in keeping his loved ones in your thoughts and prayers.”
Following the emergency response, Sun Princess was instructed to stop near Tekrag, Turkey, so authorities could board and conduct an investigation. As a result, the itinerary was adjusted:
- Arrival in Istanbul was pushed to the afternoon of August 21.
- The planned call at Mykonos on August 22 was canceled, with excursions refunded.
The captain acknowledged the inconvenience to passengers but emphasized that “the safety and well-being of our guests and crew remains our highest priority.”
Princess Cruises said its Family Assistance Team is in contact with the missing crew member’s relatives. Onboard, counselors have been made available to support both crew and guests during this difficult time.
