Crew Member Overboard From Norwegian Breakaway
A second Norwegian Cruise Line crew member has reportedly gone overboard within a two-week period, following an incident aboard the Norwegian Breakaway that ended without a positive outcome.
The crew member went into the water late Saturday night as the ship was returning to Boston from Bermuda. The incident took place shortly after midnight on Sunday, east of Cape Cod.
Passengers onboard reported hearing the emergency call “Code Oscar, port side,” indicating a person overboard. The crew immediately initiated emergency procedures, turning the vessel around, activating floodlights, and launching rescue boats to search the area. Access to parts of Decks 7 and 8 was also restricted during the response.
The ship contacted the United States Coast Guard, and a coordinated search operation continued for several hours. Despite these efforts, the crew member was not found.
In a statement, Norwegian Cruise Line confirmed the incident and said the Coast Guard later took over the search and rescue operation.
“Late in the evening on April 25, 2026, a crew member went overboard east of Cape Cod, Massachusetts,” the company said. “Upon confirming the incident, the vessel immediately informed the United States Coast Guard Marine Rescue Coordination Center and a coordinated search and rescue operation was initiated.”
The cruise line added that the Coast Guard eventually cleared the ship to continue its journey. “The safety, security, and well-being of our crew is our highest priority. Our thoughts are with the crewmember’s family during this difficult time.”
The search has since been called off.
According to a message shared with Cruise Law News, the crew member is believed to have been an Indian national working in the ship’s galley.
The emergency response caused a delay in the ship’s arrival to Boston by several hours, with docking taking place at around 11:30 a.m. Sunday. Embarkation for the next seven-night cruise was postponed until later in the day, although no itinerary changes have been announced.
This incident follows another recent overboard case involving a crew member from the Norwegian Viva. At this stage, no additional official details have been released.
