The Port Authority of Bilbao has awarded a €11.49 million ($13.3 million) contract for the creation and upkeep of a new solar power facility at the Port of Bilbao. The project is a core component of the port’s BilbOPS initiative, aimed at supplying shore power to docked vessels.

The contract has been granted to a consortium made up of four companies: Viuda de Sainz, SL; Radimer Servicios Energéticos, SL; Achiles Ingeniería Fotovoltaica, SL; and Solar 360. The timeline for building the plant is estimated at 18 months, with an initial two-year maintenance period included in the agreement. There is also an option to extend the maintenance period by an additional year.

Designed to deliver clean energy to ships at berth, the BilbOPS project will equip various terminals—including those handling ro-ro, ro-pax, cruise, and container traffic—with 11 shore connection points. The system will offer up to 30 megawatts of power.

Once operational, the new photovoltaic plant will ensure the Port of Bilbao can independently generate and distribute renewable electricity to ships, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable port operations.
