Crew Member Found Dead Aboard Celebrity Constellation
Italian authorities have launched an investigation after a crew member was found dead aboard the Celebrity Constellation following the ship’s arrival in the port of La Spezia on the morning of July 19.
According to Italian newspaper Il Secolo XIX, the deceased was a 33-year-old stewardess from Mauritius. She was reportedly discovered in her cabin by her partner, who was also employed on the ship. The vessel’s medical team responded after the alarm was raised but pronounced her dead at the scene. The newspaper reported that investigators are treating the case as a suspected suicide, although the official cause of death has not yet been confirmed.
After the ship completed its docking procedures, officers from the La Spezia police, forensic specialists and representatives from the local prosecutor’s office boarded the vessel to begin their investigation.
According to Il Secolo XIX, Prosecutor Giacomo Gustavino questioned the woman’s partner as part of the inquiry. Investigators are also examining the sequence of events leading up to her death, including reviewing footage from the ship’s security cameras. Authorities have indicated that an autopsy may be ordered as the investigation continues.
The woman’s body has been taken to the morgue at Sant’Andrea Hospital in La Spezia, where it remains under the authority of judicial officials. Italian authorities are also working with the Mauritian consulate to notify and assist her family.
At the time of the incident, the Celebrity Constellation was operating a 10-day cruise from Ravenna to Civitavecchia (Rome), with the voyage scheduled to end on July 20.
