Disney Wonder Crew Member Injured, Airlifted off Canadian Coast

An injured crew member aboard Disney Wonder was evacuated by helicopter during a rescue operation off the coast of British Columbia, Canada.

The emergency took place on September 8 as the Disney Cruise Line ship was traveling from Vancouver toward Alaska. At the time of the evacuation, Disney Wonder was approximately 113 miles (182 kilometers) northwest of Port Hardy.

The Royal Canadian Air Force’s 442 Transport and Rescue Squadron was called to assist with the medical evacuation and a CH-149 Cormorant search-and-rescue helicopter was dispatched to the cruise ship, where two search-and-rescue technicians carried out the operation. The injured crew member was carefully hoisted from the bow of Disney Wonder and brought aboard the helicopter.

A member of the vessel’s medical team was also airlifted from the ship to accompany the patient during the journey.

The crew member was then flown to Comox, where they were transferred into the care of British Columbia Emergency Health Services for further medical treatment.

Ship-tracking information indicated that Disney Wonder altered its course during the rescue operation, likely to provide safer conditions for the helicopter and those involved in the evacuation. Once the crew member had been successfully airlifted, the vessel resumed its planned voyage to Alaska.

No details have been publicly released regarding the nature of the crew member’s injury or their current medical condition.
