Drone Attacks Hit Port Sudan for Third Day in a Row

Drone strikes triggered explosions in Port Sudan, marking the third consecutive day of such attacks. The assault ignited a fire near the city’s maritime port, sending thick black smoke billowing into the air. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported so far.
The large-scale drone assault on May 6 targeted several key sites, including the main maritime port, the international airport, and a military base in the city. As a result of the airport attack, all flights were suspended, and passengers were evacuated for safety.
Further blasts were reported near prominent landmarks in the city center. Reports suggest these strikes may be a response to the military’s recent destruction of a weapons depot and an aircraft at Nyala airport, a site controlled by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
While many point fingers at the RSF for these attacks, the group has not officially taken responsibility. The ongoing civil war between the RSF and the Sudanese military has raged since April 2023, sparked by disputes over Sudan’s transition to civilian governance and the proposed absorption of the RSF — a former paramilitary group — into the national army.
