Victoria Container Terminal Begins Next Expansion Phase at Port of Melbourne

Victoria International Container Terminal (VICT) has begun the latest phase of its expansion at the Port of Melbourne in Australia, with the project expected to increase the terminal’s capacity by approximately 18%.

Civil construction work is now underway on Phase 3B at Webb Dock East, continuing ICTSI’s investment in Australia’s only fully automated container terminal.

The latest development will introduce two additional automated storage blocks, along with four automated stacking cranes and three automated container carriers. A further automated ship-to-shore crane will also be added to the terminal.

Phase 3B follows the A$235 million ($156 million) Phase 3A expansion, which increased VICT’s annual handling capacity by 30% to 1.25 million teu. As part of that project, the terminal’s quay was also extended, providing sufficient space for two vessels measuring 366 meters in length to berth at the same time.

Phase 3A additionally delivered three new storage blocks and 15 truck lanes, as well as two automated ship-to-shore cranes, six automated container carriers and six automated stacking cranes.

According to VICT, completing Phase 3B will provide a further 18% increase in capacity, creating additional room for growth at Webb Dock as container volumes passing through the Port of Melbourne continue to rise.

ICTSI has continued investing in the facility since Phase 3A was completed in late 2023, including further spending on automated cargo-handling equipment.

VICT currently operates seven remotely controlled quay cranes and 26 automated stacking cranes at the terminal.
