Ferry and Cargo Ship Collide at Port of Souda in Greece

A Ro-Ro passenger ferry and a cargo vessel have collided in the Greek port of Souda today, July 21, causing minor damage to both ships. No injuries were reported.

The incident occurred when the passenger ferry Elyros, which was operating a scheduled service from Piraeus to Souda, struck the port-side bow of the inbound Ro-Ro cargo vessel Iosif K. At the time of the collision, the *Elyros *was carrying 100 passengers, 32 cars and 95 trucks.

Both vessels, which are registered under the Greek flag, sustained minor damage during the incident. Surveyors from the vessels’ classification society carried out inspections to determine whether the ships remained seaworthy before they could resume operations. Following the collision, both vessels remained alongside in Souda.

The local Port Authority has opened an investigation to establish the circumstances and cause of the collision.
