La Coruna Set for Busy Cruise Day During Total Solar Eclipse

La Coruna is gearing up for one of its busiest cruise days in recent years, with five cruise ships due to arrive on August 12, 2026—the same day a total solar eclipse will pass over northern Spain. The rare celestial event, combined with an influx of cruise visitors, is expected to create an unforgettable atmosphere throughout the Galician port city.

More than 11,300 cruise passengers are expected to witness the first total solar eclipse visible from mainland Spain in over 100 years. Many guests will be able to watch the phenomenon either from locations around the city or from the decks of their ships as they depart the port.

According to the scheduled arrivals, Celebrity Apex and *Queen Anne *will be the largest ships in port, carrying around 3,200 and 3,000 passengers respectively. They will be joined by Celebrity Equinox, Borealis, and Explora III, with each vessel assigned its own berth around the harbor. To help manage the high volume of traffic, *Borealis *will dock at the Centenario Sur berth, which is not normally used for cruise ships.

The surge in cruise activity extends beyond eclipse day. Three ships are scheduled to arrive on August 11, bringing more than 9,000 additional passengers, while another vessel carrying almost 4,400 guests is due to call on August 13. Altogether, the four-day period is expected to rank among the busiest of La Coruna’s 2026 cruise season.

For many travelers, the main attraction will be viewing the eclipse from one of Europe’s top locations for observing totality. Others will enjoy the spectacle from the open sea as their ships continue onward to destinations including Bilbao and Gijón, offering a unique vantage point for one of the decade’s most anticipated astronomical events.
