Danish shipping giant Maersk has signed an agreement with Nokia to outfit 450 vessels across its fleet with private wireless networks.

This initiative is part of Maersk’s launch of its OneWireless digital connectivity platform, which is designed to deliver real-time cargo monitoring, better supply chain transparency, and enhanced operational performance.

“By transitioning to Nokia’s private wireless technology, Maersk will overcome the challenges of its current infrastructure onboard both its own and chartered vessels and gain access to increased scalability and future-proof connectivity,” Nokia stated.

The OneWireless system will be implemented across Maersk’s entire owned container fleet as well as more than 100 time-chartered ships.

Maersk explained that while customers can currently track the temperature of refrigerated (reefer) cargo, the existing 2G network limits how frequently data updates are received. The shift to 4G will allow “a substantial increase in data granularity” and open the door to “smarter cargo tracking and enhanced operational insights.”

“This platform is designed to support thousands of IoT devices, ensuring optimal performance for reefer tracking and fleet IoT,” said Kjeld Dittmann, head of vessel and cargo connectivity at Maersk.

The rollout is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2026. Maersk’s other technology collaborators on this project include Onomondo, 42com Sat, Complea, and Zededa.
