Maersk to Shift Felixstowe Calls to London Gateway
Maersk has confirmed plans to move its operations from the Port of Felixstowe to London Gateway following a strategic reassessment of its Asia–Europe services.
The Danish container shipping group said London Gateway, which handles more than a quarter of the UK’s deep-sea cargo volumes, was identified as the “most optimal port” for serving its import and export customers.
The transition is set to take effect from February 2025. As part of the change, Felixstowe will no longer feature in the Gemini network, the vessel-sharing cooperation between Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd.
The adjustment applies specifically to Asia–Europe services within the Gemini partnership. Services covering Trans-Atlantic routes and Middle East–Europe trades under Gemini will continue without alteration.
Maersk’s move represents a significant endorsement of London Gateway’s role as a major UK hub for international shipping.
The announcement follows DP World’s commitment to invest £1 billion in London Gateway, unveiled earlier this year at the Labour government’s flagship investment summit.
In recent years, Felixstowe and London Gateway have been competing to claim the title of the UK’s largest port. While DP World’s £1 billion investment strengthens London Gateway’s position, Felixstowe benefits from the backing of Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-shing, one of the world’s wealthiest investors.
