A toxic chemical leak at Waasland Port in Antwerp prompted the evacuation of Deurganck Dock after the incident was traced to the Liberian-flagged container ship MSC Mia Summer II, which was alongside the quay during cargo unloading operations.

The leak occurred on the evening of July 14. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, while police secured the surrounding area. Operations at the MPET Terminal were immediately suspended, and all personnel were evacuated. As a precaution, employees working at the Kieldrecht Lock for the Port of Antwerp-Bruges were also instructed to leave the area.

Authorities detected the leak near the dock. According to Marc Van de Vijver, Mayor of Beveren-Kruibeke-Zwijndrecht, approximately 20 people were exposed to the hazardous substance and received prompt medical treatment.

Early reports identified the chemical as hydrogen fluoride, a highly toxic substance. Exposure to low concentrations can cause irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory system, while higher concentrations may result in severe burns, deep tissue damage, and potentially fatal fluoride poisoning.

Emergency crews are continuing efforts to safely contain and remove the chemical. Shipping movements have been suspended until further notice, and the Kieldrecht Lock remains closed while the response operation continues.
