AIDA Hosts CDEMA for Sustainability Briefing in Barbados

AIDA Cruises recently welcomed officials from the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) aboard the AIDAbella in Barbados to discuss the cruise line’s sustainable ship operations.
During the visit, Environmental Officer Sebastian Treue provided an in-depth look at AIDA’s environmental management strategies. His presentation covered waste reduction practices and advanced wastewater treatment systems onboard.
The briefing also explored the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) propulsion, a technology that powers several of AIDA’s vessels. AIDA was the first cruise brand to launch a fully LNG-powered ship in 2018 and has since extended this innovation to larger vessels, including the AIDAcosma.
“This engagement with CDEMA represents an important opportunity for knowledge sharing between the cruise industry and regional experts,” Treue said. “As we operate throughout the Caribbean, maintaining strong relationships with organizations like CDEMA is essential to our commitment to responsible tourism and regional cooperation.”
The visit also spotlighted AIDA’s notable progress in reducing single-use plastics—achieving a cut of more than 77% since 2018—as well as its state-of-the-art wastewater treatment and waste management systems.
Headquartered in Barbados, CDEMA oversees disaster response coordination for 20 Caribbean nations, 15 of which are regular destinations for Carnival Corporation’s fleet of cruise brands.
