British Cruise Passenger Found Dead During Santorini Visit

A 62-year-old British cruise passenger has been found dead in her cabin while her cruise ship was visiting the Greek island of Santorini, according to Greek authorities.

The Hellenic Coast Guard said the Thira Port Authority was alerted in the early hours of Sunday, July 26, after the local shipping agent for a Marshall Islands-flagged cruise ship reported that the woman had been discovered unresponsive in her cabin.

Following the notification, the passenger’s body was transferred by boat from the cruise ship to the port of Athinios before being taken to the General Hospital of Thira, where medical staff officially confirmed her death.

The Thira Port Authority has opened a preliminary investigation into the incident and instructed that the body be sent to the Piraeus Forensic Service for an autopsy. The examination is expected to establish the exact cause of death.

Greek officials have not released further information about the circumstances surrounding the incident, and there has been no suggestion of any suspicious circumstances.

Authorities have not identified the cruise ship involved, stating only that it is registered under the Marshall Islands flag. However, according to Santorini’s cruise schedule for July 26, three cruise ships visited the island that day: Celebrity Infinity, Oceania Regatta and Celestyal Discovery. Of those vessels, only Oceania Regatta sails under the Marshall Islands flag.
