Bulk Carrier Loses Engine Power Near Port of Santos

The Liberian-flagged bulk carrier* LFG Affluence* suffered a loss of engine power while approaching the Port of Santos in Brazil on Aug. 11.

The vessel, which was arriving from Vila do Conde, was brought under control without any reported damage, injuries or pollution.

According to the Santos Port Authority (APS), LFG Affluence experienced engine failure at approximately 3:15 p.m. local time while entering the Santos navigation channel.

The bulk carrier was sailing empty and was due to load a cargo of sugar at the port.

Following the engine failure, the pilot onboard deployed both emergency anchors. This allowed the vessel to reduce its speed and eventually come to a controlled stop without striking any other objects.

Five tugboats were sent to assist LFG Affluence. The tugs subsequently towed the disabled bulk carrier to a berthing area within the port.

The incident also caused a temporary interruption to the Santos-Guarujá ferry service. Authorities suspended ferry crossings as a precaution while LFG Affluence was stabilized and the towing operation was carried out.
