On July 24, the Sierra Leone-flagged cargo ship MN Kostas ran aground near Kyriamadi, along the northeastern shoreline of Crete, Greece. Authorities reported that there were no injuries among those on board.
Shortly after the grounding, the vessel began taking on water, prompting the immediate evacuation of all 14 crew members. The crew was safely transferred to the port of Sitia without incident.
At the time of the accident, MN Kostas had recently departed from Sitia and was en route to Chekka, Lebanon, transporting a load of plaster.
The Hellenic Coast Guard has confirmed that two tugboats were dispatched to assist and are now stationed alongside the stranded vessel.
