Container Collapse at Long Beach Involves ZIM Ship

On September 9, the Portugal-flagged containership Mississippi, operated by ZIM Integrated Shipping Services, suffered a container stack collapse while docked at Pier G in the Port of Long Beach.
The U.S. Coast Guard reported that roughly 67 containers toppled into the harbor. Some struck the pier and caused damage to the emissions-capture barge Stax 2. The floating containers in the water were confirmed to be part of ZIM’s cargo.
Emergency teams, backed by Coast Guard vessels and aircraft, were dispatched to secure the scene and assess the situation. A harbor workboat was also seen pushing drifting containers to reduce hazards to navigation. The nature of the cargo inside the lost containers has not yet been disclosed.
No injuries were reported. However, Terminal G operations were halted after the incident, and the Coast Guard established a 500-yard safety zone around the affected area.
