Fire on Ceutamar 5 Sparks Emergency in Algeciras Bay

On June 25, a fire erupted aboard the service vessel Ceutamar 5 while it was operating in the Bay of Algeciras, Spain. The incident occurred around 5:26 p.m. local time as the vessel was supporting a nearby container ship. Flames quickly spread, forcing the seven crew members to abandon ship and leap into the sea for safety.
Swift Maritime Rescue Response
Spain’s Maritime Rescue services responded rapidly, deploying a unit that successfully pulled all crew members from the water. Fortunately, none of the individuals suffered serious injuries.
At the time of the fire, Ceutamar 5 had already disengaged from the container ship, a factor that prevented the blaze from affecting the larger vessel. The containership remained unscathed.
Coordinated Firefighting Effort
Emergency services, including port tugboats and Maritime Rescue teams, worked together to tackle the fire. Their efforts were bolstered by support from a Civil Guard vessel and the Isla de León, a patrol ship from the Spanish Navy, which used a water cannon to help suppress the flames.
Fire Contained, Investigation Underway
The fire was eventually brought under control, and Ceutamar 5 was towed to the Port of Algeciras. It currently remains anchored under observation as technical teams evaluate the extent of the damage. Authorities have launched a formal investigation to determine what caused the blaze.
