Germany's Hapag-Lloyd has set a global precedent by introducing a fleet-wide tracking system for dry containers.

The company's latest offering, Live Position, grants comprehensive real-time visibility from start to finish using Internet of Things (IoT) technology extensively.

Currently, over two-thirds of Hapag-Lloyd's dry container fleet is outfitted with these tracking devices, with full implementation anticipated in the upcoming months.

“It closes the blind spots of global logistics, enabling real-time decision-making and risk mitigation for our customers, while allowing a more efficient steering of our fleet of boxes,” said Dr. Maximilian Rothkopf, the chief operating officer of the company.

The development team is now focusing on integrating the tracking data into customer operational systems through an API. An upcoming enhancement to this technology will include predictions on the estimated time of arrival for shipments.
