Fugro Signs 7-Year Deal for Offshore Surveys with EirGrid

Dutch geotechnical firm Fugro has secured a seven-year framework contract with EirGrid, Ireland’s state-run electricity transmission company.
The contract covers a broad range of geo-data services as part of the “Powering Up Offshore – South Coast” programme. This initiative aims to develop offshore electrical substations and submarine cable routes that will connect upcoming wind energy projects along Ireland’s southern coastline to the national grid.
As part of the agreement, Fugro will carry out desktop research, as well as geophysical, geotechnical, and environmental surveys. The first phase of fieldwork—focusing on geophysical and environmental data gathering—is scheduled to commence in July 2025.
All gathered geo-data will be accessible via VirGeo, Fugro’s cloud-based platform, enabling live data sharing and enhanced project visibility.
Fugro notes that the project spans a challenging and varied region, including onshore, intertidal, nearshore, and offshore environments.
To handle operations across these zones, Fugro will utilise its specialised offshore fleet, including the Fugro Seeker and Kommander Iona, along with jack-up barges for work in shallow waters.
The company is also collaborating with local Irish service providers to support the campaign through services such as aerial drone inspections and metocean monitoring, ensuring a comprehensive data solution.
This initiative aligns with Ireland’s national climate goals, which include increasing renewable energy’s share to 80% of electricity generation and delivering at least 5GW of offshore wind power.
