Greenpeace Blocks LNG Terminal in Zeebrugge Protest

On October 1st, Greenpeace activists staged a blockade at Belgium’s LNG import terminal in Zeebrugge, targeting liquefied natural gas imports from both Russia and the United States.
Approximately 70 activists from 17 countries joined the demonstration, using kayaks and small boats to obstruct vessels attempting to access the terminal. The blockade briefly disrupted operations before authorities cleared the protest. Photos from the scene showed inflatable figures depicting U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
According to Greenpeace, from 2022 to June 2025, France, Spain, Belgium, and the Netherlands spent €34.3 billion on Russian LNG — a figure surpassing the €21.2 billion in bilateral aid those countries provided to Ukraine over the same timeframe.
Greenpeace Belgium has called on the EU and member states to include a Russian LNG ban in the bloc’s upcoming 19th sanctions package, aiming for a complete halt in imports.
The European Union has already proposed legislation to phase out Russian LNG imports by 2027, but the measure is still pending approval from both the European Parliament and the Council.
