The Port of Gothenburg has advanced its long-term expansion strategy by securing additional land in its outer harbor to support future development.

The agreement, made with listed property firm Platzer, includes land, office buildings, and water areas, with a total value of SEK 684 million ($71.5 million). The deal also involves the sale of a smaller logistics property located at the port’s entrance.

Room for Future Growth

The acquisition creates opportunities for approximately 210,000 square meters of new terminal space, allowing Scandinavia’s largest port to expand its operations alongside its existing logistics infrastructure.

Port CEO Göran Eriksson described the move as a logical progression as cargo volumes continue to increase.

“We are seeing steady volume growth over time, and to support the global competitiveness of Swedish industry, continuous development of the port is required,” he said.

Ongoing Expansion Efforts

This development is part of a broader westward expansion that has been underway for several decades. Growth in the area began in the 1970s with the construction of the Älvsborg ro-ro terminal and has continued with projects such as Arendal 2.

The newly acquired site is located adjacent to the future Stena Line ferry terminal, which is currently under development and expected to be completed in 2031. This further reinforces the area’s importance as a logistics hub.

Next Steps

Income generated from the existing office buildings on the site is expected to support future development plans. Detailed planning for the area will begin once the transaction is finalized.

Handling around 20 percent of Sweden’s trade and more than half of its container traffic, the Port of Gothenburg highlighted that the deal is still subject to approval by the municipal council. Ownership is expected to transfer no earlier than the fourth quarter of 2026.
