Cruise Operations Disrupted by Blaze at Barcelona Port

A fire at the Port of Barcelona on Sunday caused significant disruption to cruise activities, with a large plume of black smoke spreading across the port area.

The incident is believed to have started when a truck caught fire at a cargo terminal on the Ponent dock. The flames quickly spread to nearby trailers and vehicles, ultimately affecting around 20 units before firefighters managed to bring the situation under control. Emergency services were alerted shortly after 1:15 p.m., with the fire contained by late afternoon and fully extinguished later in the evening.

Witnesses reported hearing explosions as the fire intensified, while thick smoke led authorities to close off parts of the port. Police restricted access to key routes leading to the cruise terminals, leaving many passengers waiting outside and uncertain about their departures.

At the time, three cruise ships - MSC Orchestra, Costa Toscana, and MSCArmonia - were docked in Barcelona. Some passengers experienced delays during boarding, while others waited for updates as access roads remained closed.

Officials confirmed that there were no injuries, and initial reports indicate that the containers involved did not carry hazardous materials. Port operations began returning to normal later in the day, although firefighters remained on site to monitor for any remaining hot spots.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
