Holland America Adds Solo Balcony Cabins in Fleet Revamp

Holland America Line’s Evolution project, the largest fleet investment in the company’s 153-year history, will introduce new onboard features while also transforming accommodations across six ships.

Among the most notable changes announced for the first two vessels in the program, *Oosterdam *and Zuiderdam, is the addition of new balcony staterooms designed specifically for solo travelers. According to Holland America President Beth Bodensteiner, the decision follows the strong popularity of solo accommodations on other ships in the fleet.

The new Solo Verandahs will be the first balcony cabins created exclusively for solo guests in the company’s history, responding to growing demand for higher-end accommodations.

We are seeing increased demand for balconies and above,” Bodensteiner said, adding that the trend is being seen across the cruise industry.

“For a few years now, solo travelers are becoming more and more common, and people want experiences that are better geared toward them and their desire to travel on their own,” she continued during an industry event earlier this year.

The new cabins have been designed to meet those expectations by combining private balconies with layouts tailored specifically to solo cruisers.

“Our overarching goal was to create and design an experience that was focused on a solo traveler,” explained My Nguyen, Holland America’s director of interior design & interior operations. “With that in mind, every centimeter of space is thought of. Everything, from well-appointed, comfortable, and functional elements to a ‘home-away-from-home’ feel, you’ll see in these designs,” she continued.

Nguyen said that although the staterooms are sized for a single guest, they are intended to provide a comfortable, luxurious and visually appealing environment. She also noted that sustainability played a key role in the design process, with environmentally focused strategies incorporated into materials used for the carpeting, furniture and headboards.

The *Oosterdam *will receive 30 Solo Verandah staterooms, with pricing determined through a dynamic model based on demand.

“So based on the demand, we will turn that pricing up and down to get the right demand for those staterooms,” Bodensteiner explained. “I anticipate pretty strong demand, but I think that they will end up being a better value for our solo travelers than what they have today.”

She added that solo guests should not expect fares to be half the cost of a double-occupancy cabin.

There are only 30 of these solo cabins; we will price those based on the individual demand for that particular itinerary and sailing.”

The Solo Verandahs are scheduled to debut aboard the *Oosterdam *in late 2027, with *Zuiderdam *expected to receive the same accommodation type at a later stage.

The Evolution program will also include refurbishments to four additional ships: Westerdam, Noordam, *Eurodam *and Nieuw Amsterdam. Holland America said further details and timelines for those upgrades will be announced in the future.
