IMO Says Key to Safe Shipping is Industry's Maritime Workers

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has emphasized the vital role maritime professionals play in keeping the shipping industry safe and efficient.

Speaking during Fiji’s World Maritime Day celebrations, IMO Pacific Coordinator Sitalingi Payne recognized the work carried out by seafarers, port workers, surveyors, harbor masters, pilots, engineers, maritime educators, search and rescue personnel, enforcement officers and public servants.

Payne said it is the everyday work of these professionals that transforms maritime policies into practical action across the industry.

While vessels are becoming increasingly sophisticated and maritime systems continue to embrace digital technology, Payne said human skills, good judgment and effective leadership will remain essential.

He also highlighted the importance of ensuring seafarers receive appropriate training, fair treatment and adequate support while carrying out their duties. Maritime authorities must also be equipped to perform their responsibilities effectively, Payne said. This includes having access to appropriately skilled personnel, sufficient resources and the necessary authority.

Investing in people is therefore crucial to achieving greater maritime excellence throughout Fiji and the wider Pacific region, according to Payne.
