Iranian authorities have detained a foreign oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman, accusing it of attempting to smuggle approximately two million litres of fuel.

According to reports from Iranian media, the chief justice of Hormozgan province confirmed on Wednesday that the vessel was seized due to the alleged smuggling operation and the absence of valid documentation for the cargo it was carrying.

A legal case has been opened at the prosecutor’s office in Jask county, and a total of 17 individuals — including the ship’s captain and crew — have been arrested as part of the investigation and upcoming legal process.

Officials are now undertaking a thorough examination of the vessel. This process involves gathering necessary paperwork to determine the exact volume of fuel onboard, analyzing samples, performing tests, and verifying all associated shipping documents.

As of now, the authorities have not revealed the tanker’s name or the country under whose flag it was sailing.
