Maersk Orders Eight 18,000 TEU LNG-Fueled Megaships
Maersk has placed a new order with New Times Shipbuilding (NTS) for eight 18,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel containerships, according to several shipbroking reports. The agreement also includes options for four additional vessels, each priced at approximately $193 million, with deliveries scheduled for 2028 and 2029.
This latest order represents the next stage in Maersk’s extensive fleet renewal program and further strengthens its longstanding collaboration with the Jiangsu-based shipyard.
Over the coming four years, the Danish shipping giant is already set to receive 26 LNG-powered newbuilds from NTS, comprising both owned vessels and long-term chartered tonnage. The current orderbook includes ten 16,800 TEU ships (five from SFL Corp and five from Seaspan), six owned 15,000 TEU vessels, and ten 8,700 TEU units managed by Capital Ship Management.
With the addition of the new 18,000 TEU series, Maersk will have taken delivery of more than 30 large LNG-fueled containerships from New Times Shipbuilding, underscoring its commitment to fleet modernization and cleaner propulsion technologies.
