MV Gemini Damaged After Pier Collision in Piraeus Port

On the morning of September 5, the cruise ship MV Gemini, operated by Miray Cruises, struck the pier while attempting to dock at the port of Piraeus, Greece. Preliminary evaluations suggest the vessel’s hull sustained damage above the waterline. A crew member, speaking anonymously, said the ship hit the pier during its maneuver, leaving behind a large breach.
“MV Gemini, while docking in Piraeus, accidentally hit the dock, causing a big hole in its hull. Apparently, the problems are getting worse for this old lady,” a source told an unnamed media outlet.
Port authorities, along with the ship’s technical teams, are expected to carry out inspections to evaluate the extent of the damage and outline the repairs required before the vessel can return to service.
This incident further compounds the troubles of the 1992-built ship. Earlier in March, MV Gemini experienced an engine room fire shortly after leaving Piraeus. Smoke was seen rising from the upper decks, prompting crew and passengers to muster as a safety measure. Although the fire was brought under control, the vessel had to return to port slowly due to engine issues.
Given the most recent collision, it is anticipated that Greek port officials and classification society surveyors will require a full inspection before allowing the ship to resume operations.
