Noordam Tender Operations Halted by Sudden Storm in PNG
Tender boat operations aboard Holland America Line’s Noordam were disrupted at Kiriwina Island in Papua New Guinea after a fast-moving squall brought winds of up to 40 knots, making conditions unsafe for passengers.
According to reports, the localized storm developed rapidly, interrupting the tendering process and creating significant difficulties for guests. As the weather worsened, strong gusts reportedly sent deck chairs sliding across open deck areas, prompting passengers to move indoors for safety.
With conditions continuing to deteriorate, the ship’s captain made the decision to suspend tender operations when it became unsafe for boats to approach the vessel. The post noted that approximately 700 guests who had already gone ashore were temporarily stranded on the island while the crew waited for the winds to subside.
The captain provided regular updates, explaining that the strong winds were pushing the ship toward nearby reefs. Tendering was paused to allow the vessel to maneuver into a safer position. Once the wind eased, tender services resumed and all guests were returned to the ship without any reported injuries.
Noordam is currently operating a 42-day one-way cruise from Sydney to Auckland. Following the canceled call at Kiriwina Island, the vessel proceeded with a scheduled sea day and is set to visit Honiara on Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands next, according to the passengers’ post.
