The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with APM Terminals to advance decarbonization in container transport, beginning with the electrification of Onne Port. The agreement, valued at $60 million and fully funded by APM Terminals, was signed on September 22 at the Dutch Consulate in New York.

The phased plan outlined in the MoU aims to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and make Onne Port Nigeria’s first fully green port, setting a benchmark for logistics systems across West Africa.

Nigerian officials stressed that the country intends to bypass gradual fossil fuel reduction and instead move directly toward electrification by leveraging proven technologies.

This agreement builds on an earlier study by APM Terminals in Abuja, which showed how electrification could transform Nigeria’s transport and logistics sector. Both parties emphasized that strong public-private collaboration will be essential for decarbonization on a large scale.
