Oil Leak from MSC Renaissance III Disrupts Antwerp Traffic

An oil leak at the Port of Antwerp disrupted vessel movements in the Deurganckdok area on September 14 after pollution was detected between a ship and the shore.

The incident occurred at approximately 3:00 p.m. local time and involved MSC Renaissance III, which was moored near Quay 1718 at the MPET terminal in Antwerp.

Following the leak, vessel traffic in Deurganckdok was partially suspended. Where possible, shipping movements on the left bank were redirected through the Kallosluis rather than using the Kieldrechtsluis.

Emergency response teams quickly began work to contain the pollution and prevent the oil from spreading further with the response including temporarily sealing the damaged section of MSC Renaissance III, containing the oil that had already escaped and cleaning the affected area. Following the incident, the hole in the vessel’s hull was temporarily sealed. A permanent repair is expected to be carried out at a later stage.

Shipping traffic was able to resume the following day, with the cleanup operation also brought to a conclusion.
