Oil Tanker Strikes Sungai Johor Bridge in Malaysia

An oil products tanker, the Malaysian-flagged SMF Ixora, collided with Malaysia’s Sungai Johor Bridge on September 2, 2026. The structure sustained only minor damage and has remained open to traffic.

The incident happened shortly after the vessel was launched from the Benzmark Marine Shipyard. A tugboat had been assigned to escort and control the tanker, but strong winds and currents pushed *SMF Ixora *toward the bridge.

The escort tug was reportedly unable to prevent the collision because it did not have enough power to stop or redirect the tanker.

SMF Ixora struck the bridge structure at approximately 2:30 p.m. local time. Two additional tugboats were sent to assist, and the tanker was moved away from the bridge by around 3:16 p.m. before being safely anchored.

An inspection of the bridge was subsequently carried out, after which the structure was declared safe for continued use.
