The Port of Vancouver has published its 2026 cruise update newsletter, outlining preparations for the FIFA World Cup 2026, celebrations marking the 40th anniversary of Canada Place, ongoing whale protection efforts, and developments from cruise and tourism partners.

Port Updates

The port noted that Vancouver will become a major hub for tourism and soccer from June 11 to July 19 during the FIFA World Cup 2026.

With around 60,000 cruise passengers expected to pass through Canada Place during the tournament, the port said its primary focus will be maintaining efficient vessel operations and ensuring smooth embarkation and disembarkation processes at the cruise terminal. Information and resources for cruise guests visiting Vancouver during the event are available through the port.

The newsletter also highlighted the return of voluntary vessel slowdowns in the Salish Sea, an initiative aimed at reducing the impact of commercial shipping on vulnerable whale populations. Cruise operators visiting Vancouver have been invited to participate in the program.

In addition, Canada Place and its cruise terminal are marking their 40th anniversary in 2026. The iconic five-sail waterfront landmark first welcomed a cruise ship in April 1986 when Holland America Line’s *Noordam *called at the terminal. More recently, *Eurodam *arrived on April 24, launching Holland America Line’s 40th season operating in Vancouver.

The port also reported several infrastructure improvements at the cruise terminal. These include the addition of 10 new data connection points, expanding passenger check-in capabilities beyond Hall C. To support the upgrade, the port authority is distributing updated data connection documentation to cruise operators, port agents and shipboard IT teams.

Work is also underway to install two new elevators that will improve passenger flow between the luggage drop-off area on parking level two and the terminal’s ground floor.

Cruise and Tourism Partner Updates

The newsletter highlighted a new reporting platform developed by SSA Marine in partnership with Power BI. Designed to improve access to vessel call information, the system provides a real-time overview of cruise ship performance. Initially created for reporting purposes to the port authority, the platform is now available for cruise lines to access and use whenever needed.

The update also noted that more than 200 Destination Vancouver volunteers are assisting visitors throughout the cruise season. Volunteers are stationed at key locations including information kiosks along the Stanley Park Seawall, at Junction Market and at a new kiosk located near the Canada Place cruise terminal.

Beyond these kiosks, volunteers are available at the Canada Place Information Desk and through roaming City Host teams positioned in high-traffic areas across Vancouver to help visitors navigate the city and access local information.
