Record-Breaking Posidonia Opens in Athens, Greece
Posidonia, widely regarded as the world’s leading shipping exhibition, opens in Athens today with record participation as the maritime sector places increasing attention on security, decarbonization, and geopolitical challenges.
More than 40,000 maritime professionals are expected to attend the five-day event at the Athens Metropolitan Expo. Organizers say the 2026 edition will be the largest in the exhibition’s history.
Running from June 1 to June 5, the event takes place at a time when shipping has become a major focus of global political and economic discussions. Ongoing disruptions to key trade routes and concerns over freedom of navigation have pushed the industry further into the spotlight.
The official opening ceremony will feature Melina Travlos, president of the Union of Greek Shipowners, alongside IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez, EU Transport Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas, and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
According to organizers, this year’s exhibition is being held amid rising geopolitical uncertainty, with maritime security, supply chain resilience, and risk management expected to dominate conversations throughout the week.
In a time of international challenges and multiple disruptions, Greek shipping stands as a pillar of stability, resilience and global connectivity,” Travlos said ahead of the exhibition.
The scale of this year’s event reflects Posidonia’s expanding global influence. More than 2,220 exhibitors from 83 countries and territories are set to participate, representing nearly 9 percent growth compared to the 2024 edition. The exhibition will cover 45,000 square meters and include a record 24 national pavilions. Germany and Italy will also return with official participation after extended absences.
Visitors can expect the exhibition floor to showcase many of the key developments shaping the maritime industry. Over 30 companies will demonstrate artificial intelligence solutions developed for shipping operations, while more than 100 exhibitors will display technologies designed to help shipowners comply with stricter environmental regulations and achieve net-zero objectives.
Topics such as digital transformation, cybersecurity, regulatory compliance, and maritime decarbonization will be central themes throughout the conference program. Alternative fuels and the potential role of nuclear power in future marine propulsion will also be discussed. Approximately 70 conferences and seminars are scheduled during Posidonia week, with many taking place outside the exhibition venue due to strong demand.
The event comes as shipowners navigate one of the most challenging business environments in recent decades. Conflicts, sanctions, changing trade flows, and pressure on major shipping routes continue to influence both commercial strategies and operational decisions.
Posidonia Managing Director Theodore Vokos said recent developments in the Gulf had underscored the sector’s resilience and its critical role in global trade.
The crisis highlighted the resilience of our shipping industry,” Vokos said. “It demonstrated its importance to the global economy by continuing to operate and serve the world despite adverse conditions.”
Beyond its significance for the shipping sector, the exhibition is expected to generate more than €100 million for the Greek economy, making it the most economically impactful Posidonia event to date. Hotels, restaurants, transportation providers, and event companies across Athens and Piraeus are all expected to benefit from the arrival of thousands of international visitors.
Held under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, the Hellenic Chamber of Shipping, and the Union of Greek Shipowners, Posidonia has long been recognized as one of the industry’s premier international networking and business events.
This year’s gathering comes at a time when shipping carries greater political and economic significance than it has in years, bringing together regulators, governments, shipowners, and technology providers to discuss how the industry can respond to an increasingly complex global environment.
