SCI Expands Fleet With New LPG Carrier Sahyadri

The Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) has strengthened its fleet with the addition of a new LPG carrier, Sahyadri, officially joining service on August 14. The move is part of India’s efforts to lessen dependence on foreign-flagged ships for fuel transport.
Constructed in South Korea, the vessel measures 225 meters long and 36.63 meters wide, with the ability to carry 80,803 cubic meters of liquefied gas. Classified as a Very Large Gas Carrier (VLGC) by DNV and registered under the Indian Shipping Registry, Sahyadri will primarily operate between the Persian Gulf and India, helping secure a consistent flow of fuel supplies.
With the induction of Sahyadri, SCI’s fleet now totals 57 vessels, representing a combined deadweight tonnage of 5.2 million tonnes.
Sahyadri is the first of two LPG tankers ordered by SCI in July. Its sister ship, Shivalik, is still pending delivery. Both vessels support the goals of India’s Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, advancing the nation’s drive toward greater self-reliance in shipping.
