Wärtsilä Signs Eight-Year LNG Service Deal with Carnival

Wärtsilä has signed an eight-year lifecycle agreement with Carnival Corporation covering four LNG-powered cruise ships across Princess Cruises and Carnival Cruise Line, including two vessels that are currently under construction. The agreement marks the first long-term service contract between the two companies for Carnival Corporation’s LNG-fueled cruise ships.

The contract provides long-term performance support for Wärtsilä’s dual-fuel engines and associated equipment. The company recorded the order in its second-quarter 2026 order intake and as part of the agreement, Wärtsilä will deliver both scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, major engine overhauls, spare parts management, technical advisory services and crew training. The scope of the contract also includes remote monitoring, condition-based maintenance, technical audits, performance reviews and KPI-based performance management.

Vera Lannek, Vice President of Strategic Sourcing and Asset Management at Carnival Corporation, said the agreement aligns with the company’s focus on “operational excellence, sustainability and delivering a world-class guest experience.” She added that the long-term lifecycle agreement will help Carnival “further strengthen the performance of the covered vessels.”

The performance-based framework establishes measurable targets, including reducing unplanned maintenance costs and minimizing unexpected operational interruptions. The agreement also aims to improve vessel availability, fleet reliability and overall cost efficiency.

Andrea Morgante, Wärtsilä’s Vice President of Performance Services, said the new contract builds on the companies’ existing relationship and reflects a “shared focus on ensuring high-performing cruise operations through proactive lifecycle support, data-driven insight and close technical collaboration.”

As of November 2025, Carnival Corporation operated 11 LNG-powered cruise ships, with another six LNG-capable vessels on order for delivery through 2033. Carnival Cruise Line’s current LNG fleet consists of Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration and Carnival Jubilee, while Princess Cruises welcomed its first LNG-powered ship, Sun Princess, in 2024.

Carnival Cruise Line also has three 230,000 GT LNG-powered ships on order from Fincantieri, scheduled for delivery in 2029, 2031 and 2033. Once those vessels enter service, the brand’s LNG fleet will expand to eight ships.

Neither Wärtsilä nor Carnival Corporation disclosed which vessels are covered by the new agreement, how the ships are divided between the two brands, the specific engine models involved or the financial value of the contract.
