Huna Totem Corporation, an Alaska Native village corporation, and the City and Borough of Juneau have completed a tidelands lease agreement for the Áak’w Landing development. According to a company press release, this milestone allows the project to move forward into its final design and construction phases, including a new cruise ship dock and waterfront destination in downtown Juneau.

The agreement comes after receiving approval from both the Assembly and the Planning Commission.

“Áak’w Landing is a meaningful investment in Juneau’s future,” said Russell Dick, president and chief executive officer of Huna Totem Corporation.

“The project creates a welcoming space to share our culture and provides opportunities for local businesses, events and community use, further revitalizing the downtown waterfront.”

The project is expected to address increasing demand for berth capacity, with 95 large cruise ships forecast to anchor in 2026 and further growth anticipated in the coming years.

In addition to expanding docking capacity, the development aims to ease traffic congestion along Marine Park and South Franklin Street. It will also improve pedestrian access to local attractions and retail areas in the downtown district. The new dock will also be equipped with shore power capabilities.

The Áak’w Landing project will include more than just port infrastructure, featuring public gathering areas, dining venues, retail outlets, and cultural attractions.
