Cargo Ship Sinks Near South Kalimantan, Crew Safely Rescued

The Indonesian-flagged vessel LCT Cahaya Dana Reza capsized on January 23rd in waters near Kotabaru Regency, South Kalimantan. While the cargo sank along with the ship, all crew members were safely rescued, and recovery efforts are ongoing.
The incident happened at approximately 11:30 PM (WITA) while the vessel was traveling from Samarinda to Buntok. The ship reportedly developed a leak, prompting the captain to drop anchor to assess the issue. Despite these efforts, the leak could not be contained. As the vessel began taking on water and tilting, the captain attempted to move it toward shallow waters.
Unfortunately, the ship sank before reaching shallower depths, leaving it submerged with only its hull visible. The vessel was carrying approximately 150 tons of mixed cargo at the time. A nearby tugboat, Atlantik Star 11, responded promptly and successfully rescued all nine crew members.
Authorities have issued a warning for other vessels to steer clear of the area while operations to recover the sunken cargo are underway.
