A deadly explosion at a fuel storage and loading site near the Bridge of the Americas in Panama has left one person dead and three others injured. The bridge, which crosses the Panama Canal, has been closed to road traffic for structural checks, although ships continue to pass beneath it without disruption.

The incident took place on April 6 at the Balboa oil terminal in the La Boca area, when a tanker truck being filled with fuel exploded. The initial blast set off additional explosions in two nearby tanker trucks, resulting in a large fireball that spread toward the bridge and scorched parts of its structure.

At the time of the explosion, vehicles were traveling across the bridge, with some passing through the flames. Despite the severity of the incident, no injuries were reported among those on the bridge itself.

Emergency crews responded quickly, bringing the fire under control and extinguishing remaining hotspots beneath the structure. By the next day, officials had closed the bridge to conduct safety inspections.

Maritime operations in the Panama Canal were not affected, and vessel traffic continued as normal.
