Carnival Backs Caribbean Mangrove Restoration Project
Carnival Corporation has announced a three-year funding initiative with Conservation International focused on restoring mangrove ecosystems across the Caribbean.
In a press release, the company highlighted the importance of mangroves, noting that these coastal forests play a key role in protecting shorelines from storms, capturing carbon, and supporting marine ecosystems as well as local communities.
The funding will be sourced from onboard guest programs such as Holland America Line’s “On Deck for a Cause” 5K walks and Carnival Corporation’s “Keep the Change” initiative. The company added that further supporting programs across its brands will be introduced over time.
“The Caribbean’s warm and welcoming spirit is matched only by the breathtaking beauty of its natural environment, reminding us of our shared responsibility to safeguard these ecosystems for those who come after us,” said Josh Weinstein, CEO of Carnival Corporation.
“Working with Conservation International gives us a meaningful way to partner with communities in biodiverse coastal destinations. Together, we’re supporting local innovation and social impact while helping care for the natural wonders that make these destinations so beloved.”
Through this partnership, Conservation International and its collaborators will work to restore mangrove habitats by encouraging natural regeneration, improving research and monitoring efforts, and strengthening engagement with local communities.
The initiative will also provide support to small and micro-businesses that rely on natural resources, including ecotourism operators, fishers, and artisans.
As part of the program, these businesses will receive technical guidance, training, mentoring, and access to small grants, helping them grow in a sustainable and environmentally responsible way.
