What began as a routine day at sea quickly turned into a serious emergency aboard Oasis of the Seas after a reported man overboard incident prompted the ship to change course and launch a full search. It was later confirmed by the captain that the situation had been caused by a prank.

The incident took place on Friday as the Royal Caribbean ship was sailing from Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic back to Fort Lauderdale, nearing the end of a six-night Western Caribbean cruise that departed on March 15.

According to passengers onboard, the vessel abruptly altered its course near Cayo Guajaba, off the coast of Cuba, following a report that someone had fallen overboard. Crew immediately activated emergency protocols, throwing life rings into the sea and alerting the U.S. Coast Guard.

Passengers reported a sudden shift in atmosphere onboard as the situation developed.

Many took to social media to share updates and express concern, with some asking for prayers. One widely shared post described hearing the emergency announcement “Oscar, Oscar, Oscar, starboard,” the standard maritime signal for a man overboard, followed by the captain confirming that a search operation was in progress.

For around 90 minutes, the ship remained engaged in the search, leaving many onboard fearing the worst.

The captain later addressed passengers again, confirming that no one had actually gone overboard. According to reports from guests, the incident was triggered by a group of teenagers playing a prank. It is believed that friends of a young girl told her grandmother that she had fallen into the sea, causing panic that escalated into a full emergency response.

Once the situation was clarified, the search was stopped, authorities were informed, and the ship resumed its original route.

Many passengers expressed anger and frustration over the incident.

Several described the experience as “terrifying,” criticizing the actions that led to a large-scale emergency response and unnecessary distress. Online discussions quickly turned to calls for serious consequences, including potential lifetime bans for those responsible.

Royal Caribbean policy states that parents and guardians are accountable for the behavior of minors onboard, and the company has the authority to take action in cases of misconduct. However, no official announcement has been made regarding any disciplinary measures related to this incident.
