Carnival Opens Half Moon Cay Island Upgrades in The Bahamas
Carnival celebrated an important milestone on June 1, 2026, with the official launch of several new enhancements at RelaxAway at Half Moon Cay, one of the cruise line’s best-known private destinations in The Bahamas.
The occasion was marked with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy. The event recognized the completion of a project that has added new amenities, expanded beach facilities, and introduced a long-awaited pier that will significantly change how guests reach the island.
The new pier is the central feature of the development. For many years, guests visiting Half Moon Cay often had to travel ashore by tender boats because ships could not dock directly at the destination. With the pier now in service, vessels can berth at the island, making access easier for guests and allowing larger ships to call more regularly.
This is particularly important for Carnival’s Excel-class vessels, including Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration, and Carnival Jubilee, which previously faced restrictions due to the tendering process.
Visitors to RelaxAway at Half Moon Cay will also notice larger beach areas, with complimentary loungers and umbrellas now available. Upgraded cabanas and daybeds can also be rented by guests looking for a more private experience. Several new food and drink venues have also opened. Orchid Beach Grill and Hibiscus Beach Grill are serving buffet-style meals, while Luna Tide Beach Bar, Stay Awhile Beach Shack, and Lil’ Tiki Bar offer more choices for drinks and snacks during the day.
Getting around the island has also been made easier with the launch of a new tram system. Guests can also explore on foot using the new Papaya Pathway, a scenic walking route created to improve access around the destination.
Further upgrades have also been completed on the island’s southern side, including refreshed public spaces and improvements to existing dining and beverage areas.
RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay’s natural beauty has always made it a favorite for our guests and with the new pier, more ships can now easily access this incredible destination,” said Christine Duffy. “We’re excited that more guests than ever will be able to experience the stunning beachfront and turquoise waters.”
Carnival Sunrise was the first ship to dock at the new pier on June 1, arriving at 8 a.m. before departing later the same day. More ships followed soon after, with Carnival Sunshine scheduled to visit on June 2 and Carnival Dream and Carnival Pride due to arrive on June 3.
The project reflects a wider trend in the cruise sector, with major operators continuing to invest in private destinations across the Caribbean. Norwegian Cruise Line is developing Great Stirrup Cay, while Royal Caribbean is expanding its private destination offering after the success of Perfect Day at CocoCay.
