Costamare Adds Two More Containerships to China Orders
Greek shipowner Costamare has expanded its newbuilding programme in China, ordering two additional 3,100 TEU containerships to join its growing fleet.
According to the company’s third-quarter earnings report, the new vessels are set for delivery in the first quarter of 2028 from an undisclosed Chinese shipyard. Upon completion, both ships will commence eight-year charter agreements with a major liner operator.
This latest order brings Costamare’s total of 3,100 TEU newbuilds to six, marking another step in its gradual return to the shipbuilding market. Earlier in the year, the company placed its first newbuilding orders since 2018, reflecting renewed confidence in the long-term demand for medium-sized container vessels.
Led by Konstantinos Konstantakopoulos, Costamare currently operates a fleet of 69 containerships with a combined capacity of around 520,000 TEU, not including the new orders. The company has been carefully reshaping its portfolio, balancing strategic vessel sales with an expanding presence in the dry bulk sector.
Earlier this year, Costamare formalized this shift by spinning off its dry bulk business into a new entity, Costamare Bulkers, which manages nearly 40 owned vessels and a chartered-in fleet of around 50 ships through its CBI platform.
