Creative Recycled Boat Contest Makes a Splash at Sea

Last week on board Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines’ Balmoral, innovation and imagination took the spotlight as the ship's crew tackled a lighthearted yet challenging competition: crafting boats entirely from recyclable materials.
The challenge rules were straightforward, though not easy—each team had to construct a boat using only reused items sourced from around the ship. The boats also needed to be sturdy enough to carry six “passengers,” represented by soda cans. But the test didn’t end there. Once completed, the vessels had to float across the ship’s swimming pool and survive waves stirred up by an enthusiastic audience.
Guests and crew gathered on deck to enjoy the spectacle, cheering as the homemade boats rocked and splashed through Balmoral’s version of high seas. The event sparked laughter and friendly rivalry, while also highlighting the crew’s resourcefulness, cooperation, and commitment to eco-conscious creativity.
“This kind of thing really shows what life at sea is about,” said one guest. “It’s fun, it brings people together, and it’s amazing what the crew can do with such limited materials.”
From buoyant victories to hilarious wipeouts, the recycled boat competition was a clear reminder that when imagination meets teamwork—especially on the open ocean—anything is possible.
