The cruise industry is grieving the unexpected death of Captain Michele Bartolomei, the commanding officer of Diamond Princess, who passed away early Monday morning aboard the ship at the age of 52.

The sad news emerged while the ship was docked in Keelung, Taiwan, during a 19-day Southern Islands Explorer itinerary that had set sail from Yokohama, Japan. The official announcement, delivered through the vessel’s public address system, left both passengers and crew in shock.

Several guests recalled being woken around 2 a.m. by a ship-wide request for the medical team to report to the Deck 4 medical center. While many were unaware of the seriousness at the time and went back to sleep, the heartbreaking confirmation came hours later that Captain Bartolomei had died.

Captain Bartolomei was remembered not just for his rank, but for his kindness, professionalism, and the genuine connections he formed with passengers and crew. Known for his humility and devotion, he was highly respected throughout the fleet.

Cruise guests spoke fondly of him, with one remarking, “the best captain I ever sailed with,” and many recalling his warm presence at events like the Captain’s Circle party.

“He was a true gentleman,” shared one passenger in an emotional tribute. “He made you feel safe, welcome, and part of a family.”

As the ship reached Taipei on May 19, the somber news was relayed again to everyone on board. The emotional atmosphere was palpable, with many visibly moved by the loss.

In the wake of his passing, Staff Captain Salvatore Macera has stepped in to take command of the vessel. The crew, often described as Captain Bartolomei’s second family, is reportedly devastated by the loss.

Although Diamond Princess continues on its scheduled journey, the memory of its beloved captain remains ever-present. Passengers and crew alike are coming together to honor and remember the man who led with heart and left a lasting legacy on the seas.
