A devastating incident occurred aboard the Carnival Horizon when an 18-year-old passenger died during a recent cruise, prompting an investigation by the FBI’s Miami Field Office. The vessel returned to PortMiami on Friday, November 8 - reportedly ahead of schedule - to assist federal authorities.

Carnival Cruise Line confirmed that the tragedy took place during the voyage and stated that the company is working closely with investigators as the inquiry continues. While the official cause of death has not yet been disclosed, the victim has been identified as Anna Kepner, a high school senior who was sailing with her family on a six-night Western Caribbean cruise.

On the final day of the voyage, passengers reportedly heard an emergency medical code over the ship’s intercom on Deck 8. Guests were later informed that certain areas would be temporarily closed off for investigative purposes, and an announcement advised that “authorities will be joining the ship first thing upon arrival.”

Anna’s family described her as “a happy, bubbly, straight-A student with a bright future ahead,” adding that she had a special ability to uplift those around her. “When she walked into a room, she would light it up. If you were sad, she’d make you laugh,” they shared.

In an official statement, Carnival said:

“Our focus is on supporting the family of our guest and cooperating with the FBI. Since this is an ongoing matter under the jurisdiction of law enforcement, it is up to the FBI’s Miami public affairs office to provide further details.”

Under U.S. law, the FBI is responsible for investigating suspicious or unexplained deaths that occur aboard cruise ships carrying American citizens or docking at U.S. ports.

The Carnival Horizon is among the cruise line’s largest vessels, accommodating nearly 4,000 passengers on itineraries from Miami to destinations such as Jamaica, Grand Cayman, and Cozumel.
