Fire Contained on Chiquita Voyager at Wilmington Port
A significant fire erupted aboard the Liberian flagged containership ChiquitaVoyager at the Port of Wilmington on November 26. The blaze was eventually contained, but four crewmembers were injured and taken to the hospital for treatment.
The fire began at about 9:28 a.m. local time in the vessel’s engine room, triggering a large emergency response. Around 70 personnel from multiple agencies were involved, including the Wilmington Fire Department, New Castle County Emergency Management and several nearby fire departments providing mutual aid.
Smoke was seen rising from the ship’s superstructure, prompting firefighters to board the vessel and begin extinguishing efforts using water supplied from the pier. The U.S. Coast Guard later assisted from the waterside, while the ship’s internal suppression system helped keep the fire contained.
Emergency crews worked for roughly three hours to bring the situation under control. Firefighters stayed on site for the rest of the day to monitor the vessel for any flare ups.
The four injured crewmembers were transported to the hospital, though details on the extent of their injuries were not immediately released. Authorities are now investigating the cause of the fire.
