On May 15, the Port of Gothenburg in Sweden announced the successful execution of a landmark bunkering operation involving locally produced liquefied biomethane. This innovative effort marks a significant step forward in promoting cleaner shipping practices in Northern Europe and was made possible through a collaborative effort among several key energy and transport organizations, including St1 Sverige AB, St1 Biokraft, Nordion Energi, Terntank, and Litra AS.

The Tern Ocean, an oil and chemical tanker managed by Terntank, became the first ship to be fueled with domestically sourced liquefied biomethane at the port. The biofuel was delivered through a coordinated effort by St1, St1 Biokraft, and Nordion Energi, marking a major achievement in the ongoing effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the maritime industry.

St1 and its affiliate St1 Biokraft have set their sights on becoming major suppliers of liquefied biomethane by 2026. As part of that vision, the companies plan to establish new production facilities across Sweden to increase supply and accessibility.

In addition, Nordion Energi is moving forward with plans to construct a biomethane liquefaction plant at the Port of Gothenburg. This facility will be connected to the West Sweden gas grid, further enhancing the region’s capabilities to support sustainable marine fuel options.
