Hai An Expands Fleet with Order for 7,100 TEU Ships
Vietnam’s Hai An Transport and Stevedoring has intensified its fleet growth strategy by placing an order for its largest containerships so far.
The Hanoi-based company has signed a contract with Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co (DSIC), a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corp, to build up to four 7,100 teu vessels.
The order was made through Hai An Green Shipping Lines, a newly formed joint venture between Hai An and its main shareholder, Viconship. Details regarding pricing and delivery schedules have not yet been revealed.
These newbuilds are part of a six-ship program recently announced by DSIC, which also includes two ships each for two European clients. DSIC has now secured 14 total orders for its 7,100 teu design, strengthening its reputation as a leading shipbuilder in the rapidly expanding mid-size container vessel market.
Hai An’s latest move underscores its ambition to expand into larger vessel categories. Earlier this year, the company also placed an order for up to four 3,000 teu ships at Jiangsu New Yangzi Shipbuilding, with the first deliveries expected in late 2027. Those ships will be fitted with scrubbers and designed to be methanol-ready.
Established in 2009, Hai An currently operates close to 20 containerships focused on intra-Asia trade routes. Prior to this year’s expansion into bigger vessels, the company’s most recent orders were for a series of 1,800 teu ships at Huanghai Shipbuilding between 2021 and 2022.
