On May 2, Holland America Line hosted a heartfelt ceremony aboard the Rotterdam to celebrate Joska, the first service dog to earn five-star Mariner status and receive the prestigious Platinum Medallion, according to a company press release.

To commemorate her service and loyalty, the cruise line unveiled a permanent plaque in Joska’s honor, which now resides in the elevator bay near the ship’s atrium.

Joska, who passed away in February 2025 at the age of 12, was a beloved guide dog to Cornelia and Cornelis Marinussen. She spent much of her life journeying the world alongside the couple on Holland America cruises, exploring destinations across the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, the Caribbean, Hawaii, and Alaska.

Beyond her guiding duties, Joska held a special place in the hearts of the crew and was present for memorable events, including Holland America Line’s 150th anniversary in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, in April 2023.

“We are deeply honored that Holland America Line is commemorating Joska’s life in such a meaningful way,” said the Marinussens. “Joska spent more than 900 nights aboard Holland America Line ships, forging friendships with guests and crew on every voyage. Knowing that her legacy will continue with Holland America Line is truly heartwarming.”

In tribute to Joska, Holland America Line also introduced a charitable initiative. Funds raised during the On Deck for a Cause 5k walks aboard the Rotterdam and Nieuw Statendam this summer will benefit the Royal Dutch Guide Dog Foundation (KNFG Geleidehonden).

This foundation, which trained and provided Joska to the Marinussens and is now supporting their current guide dog, Wylou, helps individuals with visual impairments, PTSD, autism, and other disabilities by providing expertly trained service dogs.

On Deck for a Cause walks are held on every cruise and allow guests to join a non-competitive 5k while contributing to the Holland America Line Foundation, which supports various nonprofit efforts around the world.
